“ SPRINGFLING “ HISTORY

“ SPRINGFLING “ was begun in 1997 in Panama City Beach, Florida by the coaching duo of Gene and Katharine DeLorenzo. Katharine is currently the coach of field hockey at Middlebury College in Vermont, while Gene coached several different sports at Colby College and Oberlin College. Gene and Rick Nelson (Stillwater , New York ) currently conduct the day to day operation of the event and are backed by a remarkably capable staff. Over three hundred different colleges , prep schools and high schools have participated in the event. In 2004, the event moved to Palm Beach County, Florida to take advantage of better weather, facilities, transportation and local support. The past three years have seen over two hundred fifty teams take part in the event. Many outstanding teams have played at “SpringFling” including many Final Four teams from all three NCAA collegiate divisions. In 2007, NCAA champions from Divisions II and III participated in “ SpringFling” along with the nation’s #1 ranked prep school team.
